$750 is at stake! I need advice!

Yes, I know this is my 2nd long-ish entry for the day, but I'm pretty upset right now.

For those of you who don't know, the people I lived with last year basically sucked. Small group + Kevin, you know how miserable I was all year and what I put up with from my psychotic female roomie. I'm not making myself try to sound like a martyr, but I did put up with a lot of crap and got nothing but a headache and a desire to live by myself for the rest of my life.

We moved out a few days ago, and I cleaned about 1/2 the house. I sent out an email saying what I did and what still needed cleaned, assuming that the roomies would take it upon themselves and finish the job in order to get our FULL security deposit back.

I went over this morning to pick up some stuff I had forgotten in the basement, and nothing was done. Nothing. Only the petrified Stanley poop that has been piled up in the basement for 4 months was picked up, but some genius decided that they would dump it right outside the back door, where I promptly stepped in it upon throwing out the mop water.

Neither of them are in Athens. They both left for the summer, and our lease ends tomorrow afternoon. I'm assuming that considering Noah doesn't have a car and Brandi is working today and tomorrow, driving from Marietta and Columbus (respectively) is pretty out of the question.

I am so angry. I cleaned the entire house from top to bottom this afternoon because hey .... I want my 250 dollars back. Evidently no one else does, so I'm considering keeping what money we do get back. There were some things that still needed cleaned a bit when I left, but I quit caring after I got down on my hands and knees and scrubbed the chinchilla pee off of the wall in our living room. I don't own chinchillas.

I need advice. What should I do? I was considering sending both of them a fairly not-friendly email tomorrow after it's too late for them to go over and attempt to clean telling them that since they didn't clean, they shouldn't expect much of their deposit back. I won't tell them that it won't be the landlord deciding who gets what.

I know it's not my money to dole out, but I am so mad that they didn't fulfill their responsibilities as my roommates. I mean, I know I was a terrible roommate. I took out the trash and sorted the recycling every week, took care of Brandi's neglected dog, shoveled the sidewalk in the winter, took care of all the bills, took care of general maintenance, replaced fuses when they blew (every month), was Brandi's personal counselor and emotional punching bag, put plastic on all the windows in the winter since no one else thought it would be a good idea in our non-insulated house with drafty windows (I don't even want to know how much money that saved us ... it's probably sickening) ... I mean, who WOULD want to live with someone like that. It would be awful!!

Brandi cleaned about once a month and Noah did .... well ..... Noah ... he peed on the toilet seat. He was pretty good at that.

I need advice. I'm not thinking clearly right now because I'm so angry. I don't like being taken advantage of and clearly under appreciated, but I don't know how to handle this. I need someone that isn't furious about the situation to help me out. =)

My 2 cents: Send them the money and a note filled with grace. Tell them the good stuff about having them as roommates and take the high road.

I was afraid you'd say that. I'm definitely not feeling very graceful right now.

After having lived with and dealt with people at various levels and in so many different situations, I, as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord would advise you against accepting Paul's advise. THAT is a martyrs move and it is enabling their behaviour. It will not further the gospel, and is instead designed to utilize guilt. Guilt will not work with B or N, Laura. And to be a doormat for Jesus is neo-Christo mamby pamby wishy-wash pop psychology. You did the work, you earned the payment. It's economics, not christology. Remove the emotional content as much as you are able, thank Jesus for the experiences, and embrace the grace Father's provided to go through this past year with those two. Love, Your Neighbour

I know I need to give the money back. It isn't mine to take, and to keep it would only be stealing. I will write a blog entry about what I'm thinking about doing with it instead.
